Chapbook with colored wood engravings .Printed on cover : London , Printed for Houlston and Son at Wellington , Salop . This copy in publisher's printed buff wrappers . Part of the series : Twelve Chapbooks published by F . Houlston & Son , Wellington , Salop (England) and London between 1820 and 1840 .Dick Whittington and His Cat is a British folk tale that has often been adapted for stage pantomimes and other adaptations . It tells of a poor boy in the 14th century who becomes a wealthy merchant and eventually the Lord Mayor of London because of the ratting abilities of his cat . The character of the boy is named for a real life person , Richard Whittington , but there is no evidence that Whittington had a cat . (Source : Wikipedia)
Contextual Notes
Sources vary on dating; probable date range of 1807-1840 for Houlston publications given in Osborne Coll. (p. 479), which also notes that imprints with "65 Paternoster Row, London" began appearing in 1828; Meriton gives date range as circa 1820-1839.. This chapbook series contained cautionary tales, adventure stories, alphabets, natural histories, moral lessons, cries, and reading lessons in poetry and prose. Each volume contained 15-50 pages bound with card wrappers bearing illustrations of no relevance to the books' contents, and were issued either colored or plain.
