The covers of the book are color lithographs . The interior of the book is illustrated with uncolored relief prints . This is a version of Aesop's Fables in Words of One Syllable . The entire text is written using only words with one syllable .Printed on title page : By Mary Godolphin This page depicts "The Fox and the Stork. " In the story , the fox makes soup for the stork but puts it in a shallow bowl that the stork cannot drink out of. In retaliation , the stork makes the fox stew but puts it in a jar with a thin neck that the fox cannot drink from . The illustration depicts the stork and fox in a room with steaming cauldrons , books , a bellows , a turtle , bottles filled with embalmed frogs , and lizard skins attached to the wall .
Contextual Notes
Lucy Aikin was interested in early childhood education and published several readers to assist in teaching. Lucy Aikin also worked under the pseudonym Mary Godolphin when she produced several works in the series "In the words of one syllable". She was the niece of Mrs (Anna Letitia) Barbauld who was also an author and an early critic of the education system.
