Contextual Notes
Cathlamet is a town on the north bank of the Columbia River, north of Little Island and Puget Island, on Cathlamet Channel in southeast Wahkiakum County. The name, which is that of a small Indian band, means stone, and relates to the rocky course of the Columbia River through Cathlamet Channel. In the 1860s, James Birnie, a former employee of Hudson's Bay Company, operated a trading post there. Alternate names include Kathlamet, Katalamet, Cathlamah, Kahelamit, Birnie's Retreat and Birnie's Trading Post.
