Contextual Notes
The Eastern Railway and Lumber Company controlled much of the lumber land, sawmills, railways and banks around Centralia. The head of this company, F. B. Hubbard, was also president of the Employer's Association and a member of the American Legion. These last two groups were in the forefront of the campaign to defeat the Industrial Workers of the World and were involved in events which led up to the Centralia Massacre of 1919.
