End blown flute from Indonesia. This flute comes from Sunda
(West Java) and is played either alone or in ensembles. The
suling is marked by the characteristic ring of bamboo that
encases the mouthpiece to guide the performer’s breath over
the duct hole that is cut on the back of the top of the
flute. The mouthpiece is carved into the solid end of the
bamboo tube, with a small hole cut in the mouthpiece. A
ring of bamboo is wrapped around the top and tied off in a
knot to complete the mouthpiece.
This particular model
has 6 finger holes that are of varying size. This
instrument has clear tape around the body to hold together a
split in the bamboo.
